When NextSense approached Globe Memorial Company to create a permanent sandstone plinth honouring the remarkable 60-year contribution of the Lantern Clubs, we knew it would be a unique project combining our traditional stonemasonry capabilities with modern manufacturing technology.
There was far more to the overall brief than a sandstone plinth.
Because it would be installed within the grounds of NextSense School, we also had to think carefully about its surroundings and the children using the space every day. At the same time, the finished piece needed to stay true to the original design and incorporate NextSense’s recognition branding.
The unveiling date was scheduled, which gave us a firm completion date. This meant our team had to proceed from design through to manufacture and installation within a relatively tight timeframe.

Translating the NextSense design into sandstone
We worked directly with the NextSense marketing team, who supplied the original artwork in EPS format. This gave us the exact design elements we needed to create the commemorative plaque.
Colour was particularly important. The plaque featured specific colours that needed to be carefully matched so the finished result reflected the supplied artwork as closely as possible.

Precision manufacturing with CNC technology
One of the most distinctive elements of the project was the shape of the sandstone plinth itself.
Rather than a conventional square pedestal, the design featured a raised circular section with an angled face created specifically to hold the plaque.
Achieving this shape required precision.
Our CNC (Computer Numerical Control) stone machining technology allowed us to work directly from the digital design, with the machinery programmed to cut and shape the sandstone to exact dimensions.
Starting with solid sandstone, we gradually machined the stone to form the curved upper section and recessed area for the plaque. CNC technology gave us the accuracy needed to create these more complex shapes and contours, which would have been difficult to replicate using traditional methods alone.
Going behind the scenes
Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at this stage of production, which demonstrates how modern stone-manufacturing technology can complement the skills and experience of our stonemasons.
Once the CNC machining was completed, the sandstone underwent further finishing and preparation by our team before the plaque was fitted, and the completed plinth was then prepared for installation.
Designing with child safety in mind
Safety is always an important consideration in both design and manufacturing when creating something bespoke for a space used regularly by children.
The memorial was to be installed immediately adjacent to an area where children learn and play. This meant there was more to consider than aesthetics; children would interact with and move around the finished structure. For this reason, the edges and transitions of the sandstone were carefully finished, while particular attention was given to the way the commemorative plaque was incorporated into the plinth.
Rather than fixing the plaque on top of the sandstone, we machined a recess directly into the stone so it could sit flush with the surface. This removed the raised edge and gave the finished plinth a smoother finish.
A plaque designed as part of the plinth
At the heart of the finished piece is the circular black and yellow plaque, a permanent acknowledgement of the long-term support of the Lantern Clubs.
Rather than treating the plaque and sandstone as two separate elements, the manufacturing process allowed them to become part of one cohesive design.
The circular form of the upper section follows the shape of the plaque, while its angled face improves the visibility of the inscription when approaching the memorial.
The natural warmth and grain of the sandstone provides a contrast to the contemporary design. The recognition piece stands out, while the stone itself sits comfortably within the surrounding landscape.
From our workshop to the school grounds
Once manufacturing was complete, the Globe team transported and installed the finished plinth within the nominated landscaped area at the School.
The final location demonstrates why understanding the broader environment is so important during the design process.
Positioned amongst established trees and surrounded by the school’s colourful play areas, the sandstone provides a natural and understated presence. It is clearly identifiable as a place of recognition without appearing disconnected from an environment created primarily for children.
And the memorial was ready for the pre-scheduled unveiling, which brought together 120 Lantern Club members representing 26 clubs, along with NextSense students and staff, to celebrate this extraordinary 60-year contribution.
Combining technology, craftsmanship and purpose
For Globe Memorial Company, this project demonstrates what is possible when modern CNC manufacturing, traditional stone craftsmanship and thoughtful design are brought together.
Our capabilities extend beyond traditional cemetery monuments. We work with organisations, schools, churches, community groups and other institutions to develop bespoke stonework and commemorative pieces that respond to a particular story, location and purpose.
The NextSense project required our team to interpret supplied design files, precisely machine natural sandstone, integrate a custom plaque, consider the safety requirements of a school environment, meet specific branding guidelines and complete the project in time for an important commemorative event.
Each of those elements contributed to the finished result.
Most importantly, however, the sandstone plinth needed to appropriately represent the people it was created to honour.
