Memory does not fade simply because a community has found a new home. The Tamil Memorial in Sydney is proof. It is a place of remembrance, reflection and healing for a people affected by decades of persecution, violence and displacement in Sri Lanka who now call Australia home. As the nation’s first council-supported memorial of its kind, it represents an important milestone and a lasting tribute to those who lost their lives.
At Globe Memorial, we take great pride in helping to preserve stories that deserve to endure. This was a very special project, and to help you understand the significance behind it, we spoke with Mr Rajeevan, who shared his perspective on its origins, purpose and what it means for future generations.
“The Tamil people have endured decades of systemic discrimination, persecution, violence, mass atrocities and genocide in Sri Lanka spanning more than 70 years.”
Countless lives were lost, families were separated and entire communities were displaced. For many Tamils living in Australia today, these events are not distant history but lived experiences, with survivors, witnesses and family members of victims now building their lives here.
Mr Rajeevan explained that the memorial was established to honour those who lost their lives, acknowledge the suffering endured by Tamil communities and provide a place in Sydney where future generations can reflect on this history. It’s also a symbol of resilience and the ongoing pursuit of truth, justice and peace.
“The memorial holds profound significance for the Tamil community. Many members of the community have direct family connections to those who were killed, disappeared, injured, or displaced during the decades of conflict and atrocities in Sri Lanka.”
According to Mr Rajeevan, the memorial is not only a place of solace, comfort and healing, it also reflects the Tamil community’s ongoing pursuit of truth, accountability and recognition for those who suffered.
“From the outset, the vision was to create a dignified and permanent place where members of the community could pay their respects and honour those who lost their lives.”
The memorial was intended to become a central gathering place for remembrance, education and community unity. Mr Rajeevan said the community hoped it would be a place where people could acknowledge collective loss, shared experiences and pain, and draw strength from the resilience of the Tamil community. It was also envisioned as a lasting legacy for future generations born in Australia.
“The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive and deeply emotional. There has been a strong sense of pride, anticipation, and appreciation throughout the project.”
Mr Rajeevan wrote warmly of the memorial’s official opening on May 16, 2026, by Cumberland City Council Mayor Ola Hamed in the presence of community members, survivors, families of victims and distinguished guests. Among these dignitaries were Dr Hugh McDermott MP, Parliamentary Secretary and Member for Prospect; The Hon Anthony D’Adam MLC; and former New South Wales Senator Lee Rhiannon. He said their presence demonstrated broader recognition and support for remembrance, human rights and community healing.
He would also like to make a special acknowledgement expressing the community’s gratitude to Mayor Ola Hamed and Ms Durga Owen for their inspirational leadership and instrumental support in helping to deliver the Memorial.
Following the official opening, Dr Andrew Charlton MP, Cabinet Secretary and Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy in the Australian Government, visited the memorial to pay his respects and acknowledge the significance of the site to the Tamil community.
“We hope visitors leave with a greater understanding of the suffering endured by Tamil people in Sri Lanka and the importance of preserving historical memory.”
Knowing this is an important educational opportunity that highlights the consequences of hatred, discrimination, violence and injustice while promoting values including human rights, dignity, reconciliation and peace is something the Tamil community is proud of. Mr Rajeevan also said they hope it contributes to broader awareness of the experiences of Tamils, similar to initiatives abroad such as Tamil Genocide Education Week, which is officially recognised in Ontario, Canada. In doing so, future generations can better understand and help prevent such tragedies from happening again.
“Yes. One of the most significant design elements is the inclusion of the Karthigai Flower (Gloriosa Lily), which appears at the top of the memorial.”
The Karthigai Flower is widely regarded as the national flower of Tamil Eelam, the traditional homeland of Tamils in the north and east of Sri Lanka. It symbolises sacrifice, resilience and the enduring aspirations of this community. The flower also holds deep cultural significance around the world and is recognised as the state flower of Tamil Nadu in India, home to more than 80 million Tamil people.
Mr Rajeevan explained that the memorial’s inscriptions and design collectively honour the lives lost, acknowledge the suffering endured and inspire future generations to remember the lessons of history.
“The project was built on genuine teamwork and partnership. The community provided the vision and historical context, while Globe Memorial transformed those ideas into a thoughtfully designed and professionally delivered memorial.
Amandha and Glenn Darroch, and the entire Globe Memorial team, were exceptionally supportive, professional, and experienced throughout the consultation, design, and delivery process. Their care, understanding, and commitment to quality ensured that this important memorial was delivered with the dignity and respect it deserved. We feel privileged to have worked with individuals and a company that are highly regarded for their craftsmanship, professionalism, and ongoing commitment to memorial aftercare.
The Tamil community extends its sincere appreciation to Globe Memorial for their partnership in delivering this important and historic project. We would be pleased to recommend them to any community, organisation, or family undertaking a significant memorial project in Sydney or elsewhere in Australia.”
It was a genuine privilege to work with Mr Rajeevan and the Tamil community in bringing this vision to life.

I was impressed with the professional customer service I received, particularly with regards to understanding my concerns about costs involved for a memorial for my parents. Ailene Baldivino went above and beyond to assist me throughout the process, demonstrating flexibility and support for my requests. Her dedication and expertise made a significant difference in my experience
A difficult situation was made so much easier by Globe Memorial. It was be remiss of me not to mention the care and attention that Ailene provided, I could not have asked for any more assistance. I would gladly recommend Globe Memorial.

Working with Ailene at Globe Memorials was a very pleasant experience. She made me feel comfortable & supported while finalising my brother’s gravestone. There was no rush — just a genuine focus on getting everything right. The work was completed ahead of schedule. They also completed the gravestones for my parents 12 & 10 years ago with the same care & diligence. I’d like to sincerely thank the team at Globe Memorials & happily recommend their excellent service.
We contacted Globe Memorial Company to organise an inscription on Mum’s memorial plaque, and they were so very helpful. Communication was excellent, they got back to us very quickly and once the draft was approved by us, they completed the work within a few days, and also tidied up mums grave. They are a very professional and caring company, and I would recommend them to anyone looking to honour their loved ones. A special thank you to Ailene — she was amazing.
Excellent Service from start to finish. A Rolls Royce Monument structurally sound and quality finishes throughout. Glenn’s team were able to construct timely and on budget. Thank you
We had an amazing experience with Globe Memorial Co, start to finish with our late fathers headstone. Ailene was amazing, great the communicate with and always responded back extremely fast to every query. The price we received beat every other price we had received from everyone else by at least 2-5K. They are great and I highly recommend Globe Memorial Co!
If you need a monumental stonemason call Ailene at Globe Memorials. Sure, get a few other quotes as well, but then get Globe to do the job. Firstly, Globe will probably give you the best quote anyway, if not it won’t be far off. Secondly, Globe will help you iron out the particulars, style, Price points etc, and ways to meet your wishes. And finally Globe will deliver a quality product ABOVE expectations. I cannot speak highly enough of Globe. HIGHLY recommended.
