V-Cut Lettering: Where Traditional Craftsmanship Meets Modern Technology

Advanced V-cut engraving techniques that produce crisp, deeply carved lettering for public memorials, architectural signage and lasting tributes.

Some names deserve to be cut into stone with depth that time can never erase.

For families creating a custom memorial, for architects specifying permanent stone signage, and for committees entrusted with commemorating service and sacrifice, the quality of an inscription matters. It must remain clear, dignified and structurally sound for decades to come.

V-cut lettering is one of the most enduring methods of achieving that permanence. A traditional technique refined through modern CNC technology, it creates deeply carved inscriptions with lasting clarity across monuments, headstones, civic memorials and architectural stonework.

At Globe Memorial, we have been delivering this craftsmanship for more than seventy years. While tools have evolved, the care, skill and responsibility behind each inscription remain unchanged.

What V-cut lettering is and why it endures

What V-Cut Lettering Is and Why It Endures
With V-cut lettering, each character is carved into the stone at a precise angle, forming a sharp V-shaped profile. The angled sides create natural shadow lines within each letter, allowing the inscription to remain legible in varying light conditions from bright sunlight to overcast skies.

Because the cut penetrates deeply into the stone, visibility does not rely solely on applied finishes such as paint or gold leaf. Inscriptions may be left natural, allowing light and shadow to define the letterform.

The depth of the groove also improves long-term durability. As surface wear occurs gradually over time, the integrity of the letter remains intact.

Finishing options include:

  • Natural stone finish
  • Genuine 24-carat gold leaf for traditional contrast
  • Enamel paint in white, silver or black for enhanced visibility on darker or polished stone

For public memorials and architectural projects, this durability reduces maintenance concerns.

For families, it offers reassurance that the tribute will endure.

The Globe V-cut process

Every project begins with a detailed consultation. We clarify all design requirements, including font style, layout, finish and overall design intent.

A computerised draft is then prepared and formally reviewed prior to production to ensure complete accuracy in spelling, spacing and proportions, particularly critical for Civic and War/Service memorial projects where precision is essential.

Specialist software is used to program the CNC machinery, defining:

  • Lettering style
  • Depth of cut
  • Tool path and technical settings required to achieve the correct V profile

Tool selection is critical to achieving clean internal angles and consistent depth.

Once the stone is loaded, the V-cut process may take several hours or days, depending on the complexity of the design. The machinery is never left unattended. An experienced operator closely monitors each stage to ensure the integrity and precision of the work.

Technology enhances accuracy, but experience remains indispensable.

From hammer and chisel to CNC precision

Historically, V-cut lettering was laid out directly onto stone using rulers, scribes and the mason’s trained eye. Each letter was carved by hand with hammer and chisel. This was a highly skilled and physically demanding craft.

Accuracy relied entirely on experience and steady repetition. A single misdirected strike could compromise both the stone and the craftsman.

Today, modern CNC machinery allows Globe to reproduce the same traditional V-cut style with the same sharp internal angles and refined finish while eliminating the risks associated with manual carving.

Importantly, none of the artistry is lost.

Historic hand-drawn fonts can be carefully matched and replicated, as can modern digital artwork. For restoration works and additions to existing War and Service memorials, this capability is essential to maintain alignment with established lettering styles.

The physical strain may have eased, but knowledge of stone behaviour, letterform proportion and layout remains fundamental to achieving a clean, lasting result.

V-Cut Carving v Sandblasting

Sandblasting is a mechanical engraving process in which a stencil is applied, and high-pressure abrasive material removes the exposed surface of the stone.

Because it removes only the surface layer, sandblasted lettering is typically shallow and does not create the same natural shadow lines as V-cut carving. Visibility, therefore, relies more heavily on paint or gold leaf, both of which will require maintenance over time.

V-cut lettering offers:

  • Greater depth and structural integrity
  • Improved long-term legibility
  • Finer detailing and personalised elements
  • A more architectural and permanent finish

For architects specifying feature walls or integrated stone signage, V-cut provides a refined, structural aesthetic.

For War and Service memorial committees, it ensures alignment with traditional carved inscriptions already in place.

When speed and cost are primary considerations, sandblasting can be appropriate. When permanence, depth and longevity are priorities, V-cut is generally preferred.

Where V-cut lettering makes the most sense

V-cut lettering is frequently selected based on the functional and historical requirements of the project.

Project Type

Why It Is Specified

Additions to existing memorials To match earlier carved inscriptions
War and Service memorials To maintain alignment with established traditional lettering
Architectural signage To integrate lettering structurally within stone elements
Commercial feature walls To create a unique style
Restoration projects To replicate original hand-carved fonts and layouts

Because the cut is structural rather than surface-applied, it is particularly suited to projects requiring long-term durability and visual consistency.

Made to be remembered

V-cut lettering sits within a specialised area of traditional masonry. It demands a strong understanding of stone, proportion, spacing and finish – skills developed through decades of practice.

At Globe Memorial, we approach every inscription, whether for a family memorial, a civic installation or a War and Service monument, with the same responsibility: to create lettering that feels solid, considered and permanent.

When an inscription represents legacy, service or love, it deserves to endure.

If you are considering V-cut lettering for a memorial, architectural project or commemorative installation, our team can guide you through the options and specifications. Contact Globe Memorial to discuss your project.

If you need a monumental stonemason call Ailene at Globe Memorials. Sure, get a few other quotes as well, but then get Globe to do the job. Firstly, Globe will probably give you the best quote anyway, if not it won’t be far off. Secondly, Globe will help you iron out the particulars, style, Price points etc, and ways to meet your wishes. And finally Globe will deliver a quality product ABOVE expectations. I cannot speak highly enough of Globe. HIGHLY recommended.
