From Concept to Reality: Bringing the Karthigai Flower Memorial to Life

When Globe Memorial was approached by the Tamil community with a vision of creating a memorial inspired by the Karthigai Flower (Gloriosa Lily), we knew we were being entrusted with something culturally significant and truly unique.

Our team was challenged not just to build a monument but to faithfully transform this iconic flower into a permanent granite memorial that would serve as a lasting place of reflection for future generations.

While the finished product is elegant and seamless, the journey from first concept and conversation to completion was months in the making. It involved design, development, engineering, manufacturing, craftsmanship and collaboration.

The result is Australia’s first council-supported Tamil Memorial, located at Pendle Hill Park in Sydney. The Karthigai Flower is the defining design feature, prominently positioned at the top of the memorial, it symbolises remembrance and resilience.

"Even a minor variation in shape could affect the overall appearance of the flower."

Designing the Karthigai Flower

You can’t tell a story you don’t understand, so hearing what the client wants the memorial to say is always the first step.

The Tamil community gave us a brief that was inspiring, but technically complex. Recreating the Karthigai Flower in granite required close attention to every detail, from its shape and proportions to its long-term durability and aesthetic appeal.

Our design team created detailed three-dimensional models and computer-generated imagery of the flower petals using advanced 3D modelling software.

This allowed the community leaders to properly visualise the memorial before manufacturing began, while giving us the opportunity to refine the shape, proportions and position of each petal.  More importantly, this phase also allowed our engineering team to properly assess structural requirements and determine how each petal would interact with adjoining components once assembled.

"More than just creating a memorial, this project for the Tamil community highlights our ability to take highly complex concepts and transform them into something permanent, structurally sound and beautiful."

Engineering for strength and longevity

Structural integrity is always paramount in any construction project. But unlike traditional memorials that typically have simpler shapes and forms, the Karthigai Flower design featured multiple individually shaped granite petals arranged together in an intricate sculptural piece.

The engineering also had to account for environmental conditions, not just for the structure as a whole but within every individual component, while maintaining the beautiful artistry.

Weight distribution, fixing methods, support requirements and installation procedures were just as important in ensuring the memorial remained stable and secure throughout its lifetime.

This is where years of experience made all the difference, allowing us to preserve the detail of the original concept without compromising on structural performance or Australian standards.

Manufacturing the petals

Following design and engineering, the project went into manufacturing, and because of the complexity of the shape, we produced mould castings of the petals first. These casts allowed both our team and the Tamil community representatives to review the physical form, make any final refinements and approve the design before work began on the granite.

This crucial phase is where we ensure the contours, curves and dimensions accurately reflect the Karthigai Flower.

Next, the manufacturing of the granite petals themselves. Each petal was individually carved and shaped to precise specifications, with every piece needing to align perfectly once assembled because even a minor variation in shape could affect the overall appearance of the flower.

Advanced technology worked hand in hand with traditional stonemasonry throughout the manufacturing process.

Handfinishing the artwork

The intricacy of the artwork didn’t end with the exquisite shaping of the petals. Its vibrant colouring is also a very distinctive feature.

After shaping and polishing, our experienced craftsmen carefully hand-painted each section individually to replicate the colours and detail of the Karthigai Flower and ensure consistency across the monument. This required patience, precision and an extremely steady hand.

The finished artwork transformed the sculptural black granite petals into an instantly recognisable representation of the flower that inspired it. Rich colour tones and gold detailing preserve the natural beauty of the granite while remaining true to the symbolism behind the memorial.

Installation and final assembly

The final stage involved transporting the monument to Pendle Hill Park and completing the much-anticipated installation. As part of the project, Globe Memorial designed and supplied a custom bronze plaque for the memorial base. It features inscriptions in both English and Tamil to welcome both the Tamil community and the wider Australian public while reflecting the memorial’s cultural identity.

Given the size and weight of the structure, engineered footings were designed and constructed to provide a stable foundation for the memorial. Each granite component was then positioned and assembled on site to ensure precise petal alignment and preserve the integrity of the original design. It marked the culmination of months of planning, engineering, manufacturing and craftsmanship.

The completed Tamil Community Memorial beautifully decorated for an event. The monument features the painted red and gold flower sculpture atop a polished black pedestal, surrounded by large wreaths of vibrant red and yellow flowers.

More than a memorial project

More than just creating a memorial, this project highlights our ability to take highly complex concepts and transform them into something permanent, structurally sound and beautiful. To learn more about what it means to the Tamil community,  read their powerful story here.

All stages of the process required attention to detail, collaboration, expertise and care to create a bespoke memorial. When design, engineering, manufacturing and installation all come together, the possibilities become much greater.

It is projects such as this that demonstrate the power of memorialisation. They preserve history while also educating, encouraging reflection and bringing communities together.

We are honoured to have partnered with the Tamil community on this historic memorial and thank them for the trust they placed in our team.

If you need a monumental stonemason call Ailene at Globe Memorials. Sure, get a few other quotes as well, but then get Globe to do the job. Firstly, Globe will probably give you the best quote anyway, if not it won’t be far off. Secondly, Globe will help you iron out the particulars, style, Price points etc, and ways to meet your wishes. And finally Globe will deliver a quality product ABOVE expectations. I cannot speak highly enough of Globe. HIGHLY recommended.
